Interview with Focus on the Story on My Street Photography Workshop Philosophy by Chris Suspect

Denver, Co. | © 2019 Chris Suspect

There is a nice interview on Focus on the Story with me about my upcoming street photography workshop, May 29-May 31, that’s part of the larger Focus on The Story Festival. In the interview I touch on how I run my workshops and the kinds of things I want my students to take away.

By being a student of photographic history and a dedicated practitioner of the craft, you will ideally find yourself in a better position to recognize more visual opportunities and be able to express them with your own unique vision.

There are still some spots available so if you are interested please visit the official workshop page. You can also take this workshop a la carte if you do not want to register for the festival. One other cool thing about this workshop is that all the participating students will have their work projected during the opening party which is a great way for your work to be seen by many of the influential guests and presenters that will be there.

This May 16-19 I will be in Milan, Italy as a featured presenter during Street Photo Milano. The focus of my lecture will be on several of my black and white projects over the years, including Gratuity Included, Faith and Suspect Device.

Gratuity Included is a 7 plus year project that explores the party lives of millennials around the globe. It’s a raucous look at how young adults socialize in the digital age.

Faith is a year-long deep dive into a group of gay African Americans in Washington DC that have empowered themselves to create their own social and religious community in the face of racial, homophobic and religious discrimination.

And, Suspect Device is my personal four-year-long look into the punk and hardcore music scene in Washington, D.C. and Baltimore.

I will be speaking at 5 p.m. of Friday, May 17 at BASE Milano, Via Bergognone 34, 20144 Milano.

Other presenters include Matt Stuart, Jacob Are Sobol, Gueorgui Pinkhassov, Eléonore Simon, Fulvio Bugani, Michael 'Monty' May, and many more.

The Results are in for World Street Photography Competition Vol. 6 by Chris Suspect

For the last four years I have served as a curator on the the World-Street.Photography book competition and this year was the best of all in terms of quality images that were submitted. I had a really tough time selecting my top images that you can see here. There were so many good ones that I was pleasantly surprised. The books that this community produces are really top notch and keep getting better over the years. For those of you reading this who didn’t get selected, I do want to encourage you to keep submitting as different curators look for different things and tastes are always evolving. I think World Street Photography VI may be the best publication yet.

Crystal City Fotowalk, Spring 2019 by Chris Suspect

I am excited to have three images in Exposed DC’s new exhibit in the Crystal City Underground in Washington, D.C. For those not in the DC area, Crystal City is an neighborhood in the southeastern corner of Arlington County, Virginia, south of downtown Washington, D.C. Due to its extensive integration of office buildings and residential high-rise buildings, the area uses underground corridors to travel between stores, offices, and residences without going above ground. It’s kind of like Toronto in a way.

Exposed DC takes advantage of many of the long stretches of corridors to hang photographs. They have done several exhibits there over the years and they are pretty mammoth shows. The show this spring features 62 photographers with probably over 100 images printed very large, 3 X 5 feet usually. It’s pretty awesome as there is massive amounts of foot traffic through this area due to all the businesses and the metro system.

This upcoming Spring exhibit is about color, how it is seen, captured, and used through photography.

Feel free to attend the opening reception at Gallery Underground on April 5 from 5-7 p.m. as part of Crystal City's First Fridays.

The Spring 2019 exhibit will be installed on March 31.
